Baggy cut of Jorts

Jorts may never die. Since their inception in 1910s Bermuda, they've slowly been invading more wardrobes through generations of people.

Although you probably think your dad looks terrible in his jorts, over time with trends rising and falling it's more than likely you'll have a similar item of clothing in your wardrobe.

They were originally born from necessity, long trousers that were cut because British workers needed a way to battle the tropical heat.

They later evolved into a regular wardrobe staple in the 60s and at the same time gained notoriety as a grunge icon in different subcultures.

In the 70s Hippies became the number one ambassador for denim across the world and had no shortage of jorts ready to spread peace and love.

Later in the 80s jorts gained even more traction for a variety of reasons, one being the evolutions of the counter-culture movements that became trendier, and another reason is their feature in popular films of the decade for example Dukes of Hazard.

Baggy Jorts may have been the most hideous item of clothing you could see in public five years ago, the type of thing you'd only see at costume parties, however since 2023 baggy past the knee Jorts have seen a major resurgence in popularity in the streetwear scene.

Your jorts may not look the same as your dads ill-fitting slightly stained cut offs however because the only requirement for jorts to acquire the name is that they are a piece of denim that you can fit both legs in no matter the size shape or fit they do tend to become fashionable again once every ten or so years and its more than likely you'll end up with pair because they look cool.

The resurgence of Baggy jorts hasn't been completely random. Over the last couple of years denim clothing has gone from primarily skinny to overall baggier and more grunge oriented.

Celebrity names have a large role to play in the in the recent resurgence of baggy jorts. Many large names in the online fashion space and influential celebrities have been spotted wearing baggy jorts by paparazzi for example Paul Mescal Wisdom Kaye the Hadid sisters and Kendal Jenner.

Major online outlets have given numbers that directly show the rise of jorts over the last couple of years.

Depop reported they have seen a 1700% rise in jorts sale since January 2025.

Pinterest have reported that there's been an 865% rise in the search Jorts outfits women and another 600% rise in the search for Jorts outfit.

Jorts are extremely versatile as they offer an item of clothing that are as durable as denim and not as warm as a full pair of jeans. They are popular in the skateboarding comity as a piece that won't rip or tear under harsh conditions but also offer full range of movement in the lower body which is vital for skate tricks.

The recent upcycling trend has also been vital in the recent rise in popularity of jorts as they can be created from any pair of old or ripped jeans with a pair of scissors needle and thread or just a pair of scissors if you're okay with the hem being frayed giving it a more messy look.

The fact jeans can be upcycled into Jorts also correlates with the fact that the economy is terrible and people don't have as much money as they used to have to spend on fast fashion and designer clothing brands meaning this fashion trend is more than likely one of the easiest to take part in along with cropped graphic t-shirts and dyed canvas shoes.
