Jorts may never die. Since their inception in 1910s Bermuda, they've slowly been invading more wardrobes through generations of people.
Although you probably think your dad looks terrible in his Jorts, over time with trends rising and falling it's more than likely you'll have a similar item of clothing in your wardrobe.
They were originally born from necessity, long trousers that were cut because British workers needed a way to battle the tropical heat.
They later evolved into a regular wardrobe staple in the 60s, and at the same time gained notoriety as a grunge icon in different subcultures.
In the 70s, Hippies became the number one ambassador for denim across the world and had no shortage of Jorts ready to spread peace and love.
Later in the 80s, Jorts gained even more traction for a variety of reasons, one being the evolution of the counterculture movements that became trendier, and another reason is their inclusion in popular films of the decade for example Dukes of Hazzard.
Baggy Jorts may have been the most hideous item of clothing you could see in public five years ago, the type of thing you'd only see at costume parties, however since 2023 baggy past the knee Jorts have seen a major resurgence in popularity in the streetwear scene.
Your Jorts may not look the same as your dad's ill-fitting, slightly stained, cut offs. However because the only requirement for Jorts to acquire the name is that they are a piece of durable fabric that you can fit both legs in. No matter the size shape or fit they do tend to become fashionable again once every ten or so years.
The resurgence of baggy Jorts hasn't been completely random. Over the last couple of years denim clothing has gone from primarily skinny to overall baggier and more grunge oriented.
Celebrity names have a large role to play in the recent resurgence of baggy Jorts. Many large names in the online fashion space and influential celebrities have been spotted wearing the obscure fashion item by paparazzi, for example Paul Mescal, Wisdom Kaye, the Hadid sisters and Kendal Jenner.
Major online outlets have given numbers that directly show the rise of Jorts over the last couple of years.
Depop reported they have seen a 1700% rise in Jorts sales since January 2025.
Pinterest have reported that there's been an 865% rise in the search: "Jorts outfits for women" and another 600% rise in the search for: "Jorts outfits."
Its easy to see if you google Jorts right now there's loads of fast fashion brands taking advantage of the trend to capitalise on potential costumers.
The list of brands with similar looking Jorts could go on forever with brands such as: Boohoo, Shein and Berksha as the top search results on chrome.
The trend will more than likely end up being done to death with Boohoo offering them at a staggeringly cheap £8.
As such a niche item of clothing Jorts will probably only last a summer or two before there seen as cringe in the social zeitgeist. This is sad as different Jorts have a rich history.
It's not terrible news for Jorts fans as the fact that there's been so many different iterations of Jorts over the years, means they'll end up coming back in a new form.
Jorts are extremely versatile some of the many styles they've come in over the years are: cargo, straight, skinny and the current trendiest Y2K baggy style Jorts. You can also get them in different fabrics such as: Suede, both regular and stretch denim, linen, some cotton blends and Chino.
They offer an item of clothing with the durability of denim however aren't warm as a full pair of jeans.
They are popular in the skateboarding community as a piece that won't rip or tear under harsh conditions but also offer full range of movement in the lower body, which is vital for skate tricks.
The recent upcycling trend has also been vital in the rise in popularity of Jorts as they can be created from any pair of old or ripped jeans with a pair of scissors, needle and thread or just a pair of scissors; if you're okay with the hem being frayed, to provide a more messy look.
The fact jeans can be upcycled into Jorts also correlates with the fact that the economy is terrible and people don't have as much money as they used to have to spend on fast fashion and designer clothing brands, meaning this fashion trend is one of the easiest to take part in along with cropped graphic t-shirts and dyed canvas shoes.
